DUNCAN VILLAGE - A GIFT FROM GOD

Duncan Village is a neighbourhood on a distance of 3 kilometres from the centre of East London ( South Africa ) where about 100 000 people live on 325 hectares disaster area. A large number of them lives in shacks mostly built with waste material.

The neighbourhood was before the end of Apartheid classified as a black area. Attempts during the sixties to move the residents to Mdantsane on a distance of 20 kilometres had to be abandoned. During the nineties large investments were made to improve particularly the infrastructure of the neighbourhood. In 2004 the Municipality (Buffalo City) initiated the plan to tackle the houses as well and to redevelop the area. The Provincial Government and the Intervolve Foundation were pulled in as partners. For the last longer periods during 2004, 2005 and 2006 have been spent in East London to advise on the project. In 2006 a new direction started to emerge but unfortunately hardly any progress has been made.

During the Conference held in Abbotsford Christian Centre in October, 2010 the Lord said "We should take Duncan Village for Him". This implied that we should take Duncan Village Transformation as a Citywide Project for Him. This message kept coming repeatedly through several sources as a confirmation. Presently efforts at being made to gain access into the community to begin this project.

Spiritual research into the foundation of the community revealed that alot of spiritual atrocities have been done in the land including killing of the black frying of a Sister nun alive in the community. A monument was even build to symbolize that evil transaction that took place in that community.

Redevelopment

Duncan Village is an area of recurring disasters. Large numbers of shacks are regularly destroyed by fire and flooding. But this former black township in close proximity of East London’s Central Business District is a disaster in its own right. The majority of its population live in shacks and lack regular employment. Without income and hardly any own resources they are unable to shape their own future. Existing in poverty and squalor is a permanent disaster that impacts negatively on its direct victims but also on its broader environment and on the generations that have to grow up in it.

This project will take several  phases including:

  1. Feasibility Study

  2. Foundational series

  3. Capacity Building

  4. Skill empowerment

  5. Entrepreneurship training, etc
